Nuclear Deal a Boon or Bane to our country’s power development???????

A popular saying as everyone would have heard of this “until one sees or hears of something, it cannot be or will not be treated as truth”. So, I would keep this saying as reference for the rest of my detailed analysis on the hottest of hottest topic above all and that is “Nuclear Deal”.

This deal or idea conceived almost 4 years ago between our Prime Minister and US president during earlier visit to US as a part of bilateral visits. Not much of this deal was talked about during those times and when it reached nadir, suddenly everyone in both countries have started talking aloof on this issue. Neither of the Parties (India or US) disclose many details of what this detail about and kept saying that it is in the so called
“IN THE NATIONAL INTERESTS” and has become a trait from then on. What is this National interest about, what are its impacts on both the countries, who is benefitting and how much anything of this is disclosed in the developments of this deal is to be questioned.

Let me put forward my views to what extent this deal is of actually a “National Interest”.

As we all have a fair idea about what this deal is actually about. It is to meet the energy needs of our country. As a fast developing nation, we have considerably consumed more and more energy for the development needs. Now this development has taken a hit as the energy needs are not met and immediate corrective action was in the need of hour.
This led to the deal with US in helping us to meet the energy needs.

Firstly let’s discuss the positives of the deal:
- Lots of power can be generated and energy needs can be met.
- Best nuclear technology will be offered by US.
- Continuous uranium supply was promised with ambiguity conditions.
- Civilian Nuclear reactors which are currently working will be given a facelift.

And more importantly the negatives of this deal:
- This agreement is under US atomic energy act called 123 act. Detailed report of what is this 123 act about is made public. Many nuclear experts felt that there are so many ambiguity statements in the report and this would lead to disaster if any of these lead to unprecedented acts from US. Since these stated in ambiguity, neither would agree with each other that they are correct. In the end, as US is Superpower it has got the upper hand and can take its own action on further status of this deal.
- We have to abide by the IAEA safeguard rules and not allowed to take our own way of doing this in nuclear development. We in the end have lost our sovereignty which we had till date.
- We are now not allowed to undertake or involve in nuclear tests which was actually done by BJP (pokhran test) when it was in power. This in turn makes us to become slaves under US and strictly follow like a MAD dog what they instruct us to do.
- With this nuclear deal we have to approximately spend Rs50000 crores on further developments in nuclear energy. This is a whopping amount in terms of expenditure by govt.
- This technology is not environment and human friendly and has adverse effects if proper care and attention in development of this technology is not taken. We have heard of many tragedies like Bhopal gas tragedy which is less complex in terms of technology and less care and attention is needed have ultimately proven to be disaster.
- We have clean natural sources available in terms of wind or solar where the level of disaster happening is very less comparatively and most importantly less expenditure is required for this form of energy development.
- As one of the study suggests that there is actually lots of uranium is present in INDIA in particularly in kanyakumari. This on proper extraction and utilization would cut short of the energy needs to a certain extent. As scientifically proven, that little uranium can produce lot of energy compare to any other energy resource. Buying from a third party invites more money to be spent. Instead, we can be self sufficient with the uranium reserves present with us if and only if properly used.
- Most importantly it is not clear till now what is US gaining from supplying uranium and technology to us. What seems to me is we are playing is with big fish with not much of lessons learnt from history. As we as all know America has got more veto on the deal and can act weirdly if the situation demands and we will be most affected.
- As we don’t know the reasons behind US agreeing to support us, one thing is clear from this is that US is trying to gain ground in our soil and wants to prove time and again that no one can their so called “SUPER POWER” status.
- It is in the best interests of INDIA as I call it is to forego this deal and look for other means as having greater relations with China in terms of coal agreement which could comprehend our energy needs in greater terms.
